This week I have started the process of building my website. I have secured my domain name ‘www.joelhatton.net’ as .com was already taken. I went with Uniregistry because they’re cheap and simple to use and have a relatively nice interface. Next, I looked at some WordPress templates to see what would be suitable to use as my portfolio – and that I could afford. I eventually decided to go with Salient as it seems to be very flexible and comes with a good framework of elements I can incorporate into my designs. I really like the style of this template and I’m looking forward to seeing what I’m able to do with it.
I bought my web hosting from a company called Krystal after looking at the many other different options. They seem to have really good support and a good business ethos. The website should also load quicker, too, with their good quality fast hosting. I then connected my domain to my hosting service and set up a ‘.htaccess’ file in order to redirect joelhatton.net to joelhatton.net/masters. I did this because I wanted to keep my university website on /masters redirect while I develop a main website at the root domain at a later time.
I have now installed WordPress along with my theme and I’m currently going through trying to get familiar with it all. Hopefully with the help of some tutorials and some pointers from some friends, I’ll be able to adequately tweak the code of this template to suit my needs for my portfolio website.
