This week I have been working on my branding for my ‘vRecce’ app for my Emerging Media module. I’ve been thinking about possibly changing the name of my app and I’ve come up with the following alternatives: Virtunoitre; Scoutr; Locatr; Trekke; Locale; 360Recce or Recce 360; Rem; Spasez; Locis (‘places’ in Latin); Spatia (‘spaces’ in Latin); Terra (‘land’ in Latin); and Seen, or Sceen. Some of these names gave me some good ideas for logos, for example, as I wrote ‘Seen’ I immediately thought I could use the ‘EE’ to mirror one in front of the other. As I did this I figured I could put them in the shape of in eye which fits the word perfectly. An alternatively idea was to have in lowercase and use the ‘ee’ as two eyes looking somewhere. I didn’t like this so I developed it to be a bit more abstract by taking one of the e’s and slicing it into three simple parts of a nice round circle. For the ‘Scoutr’ design I used a scope design for the ‘O’ but this had too much of a war connotation so I changed it to a radar design to resemble the searching and finding of locations. I chose not to Recce 360 as this reminded me too much of the ‘Xbox 360’ and so I drew some designs for ‘360Recce’. I started with the ‘0’ ending with an encompassing circle around the rest of the design to symbolise the 3D nature of the app. I took the circular idea and simplified it down to basic shapes, before laying around with it in 3D. I then started using the line in the zero as a soft curved ‘r’ to resemble the ‘recce’. Moving on to Spatia, as I wrote the word I saw that the two A’s could be used to link the two middle bars together. Once I did that I then saw that one could be made larger to make it look like the generic image icon. For ‘Spasez’, I used the ‘s’ and the ‘z’ in another mirroring style and then started playing around with the shapes that presented. With the original name I was trying to connect the ‘v’ and the ‘R’ in a stylised fashion before playing around with the heartbeat style. I veered away from this as the design wasn’t relevant so I brought back the circular design from before to resemble the 360 nature. I put this with the ‘vrR’ to make it clear it was a VR app to people who might not have used it before, which nobody will have at the beginning.
After taking a break from it all and asking for feedback from my peers, I found that most of the designs either felt too military or sci-fi. The feedback was quite scattered but in the end, most people preferred the ‘vrRecce’ designs as they said it was much more clear what the app is. Perhaps I have been focusing too much on simply making nice designs and not focusing as much on making it clear what the app is. Based on the feedback, I have chosen to go with the ‘vrRecce’ circular design.
I am going to be using the same fonts in this app as with my other one to again, keep that consistency, but I have decided to choose a different colour pallette. This time I have gone for gold-ish theme using a soft orange and subtle gradients. As this app is directed more at land-owners and not just students this time, I have decided to make it look a bit more professional and mature
